“It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Andrew ‘Andy’ McDougall on August 17th. Andy was an esteemed member of the Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union, dedicating over twenty years of his life as their team physiotherapist from 1976 to 1998. One of his proudest achievements was his extensive travel with the Wairarapa Bush side to every first-class rugby ground in New Zealand during that time.
Andy’s unwavering commitment and contributions to the Union were especially magnified during the ‘glory’ days of the 1980s in the NPC First Division. Alongside revered coaches like Sir Brian Lochore and Lane Penn, Andy played an integral role in the team’s success. His expertise also extended beyond domestic matches, as he served as physio during the Wairarapa Bush tour games against the British and Irish Lions, France, Argentina, and the triumphant match against Romania in 1994.
Beyond his work with the representative side, Andy had a longstanding association with the Masterton Rugby Club, which continued even after its amalgamation with Masterton Red Star. His passion for supporting sports in Wairarapa went beyond rugby, including a notable stint as the Chair of the Wairarapa Cricket Association. He also served as a dedicated physio for various teams, such as the Wairarapa Governors Basketball team, Wairarapa Netball team, and several secondary school teams. Notably, he accompanied Rathkeale College’s rugby and cricket tours of South Africa, leaving a lasting impact on the young athletes he mentored. Additionally, Andy was a qualified swim coach, showcasing his versatility across different sports.
Although Andrew and his wife Beth have resided in Mana for the past 20 years, he always cherished returning to Memorial Park for the reunions and Old Timers’ Days, where he could reconnect with former teammates and friends.
At 71 years old, Andrew leaves behind his beloved wife Beth, daughter Emma, son Hamish, and grandchildren Lillie and Angus Penhale.
In honour of his remarkable life, a celebration service will be held at the Ninness Funeral Home, located at 17 Kenepuru Drive, Kenepuru, Porirua 5022 on Tuesday, August 22nd at 1pm
